Apologies for my lateness, I was swept away on the Alola Islands and completely forgot! Welcome to the recap of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency episode 5, and holy cats is it a fun one. This week’s episode starts off with Gordon throwing away all of his Lux Dujor items and then he promises his dog (in Lydia Spring’s body) that he’ll put a bullet through Lydia’s brain when he’s done with her. He takes the fur coat (the one we saw Todd wearing in the hallway in the first episode, which we get to see a flash of again later in this episode) and then we cut to the title card.
Our favorite holistic assassin, Bart, arrives in Seattle with Ken, but she is startled when she realizes Dirk isn’t there. Ken eventually manages to convince her to have some Chinese food, visit a hotel room, and take a shower. Eventually she gets bored waiting around and tries to get back in the holistic groove. Bart lures her next target out into the street who then gets hit by a car and dies. She threatens Ken who tried to stop her, and tells him not to get in her way again.
When we catch up with Dirk and Todd, they are on their road trip to find buried treasure teased at the end of last week’s episode. Dirk keeps exhibiting somewhat psychic abilities during their journey and it comes to ahead in a cliché diner filled with PNW Native American art in the background, one that would never actually have that art displayed in that manner in real life. Dirk storms out when Todd tries to make him guess what he drew on a napkin. Todd tries to follow but runs into a waitress carrying soda and stains his shirt. Upon reuniting with Dirk who has procured a new t-shirt for Todd as well as a new ride, Todd gets another flash of the hallway he saw in the first episode of him wearing the same shirt (and Lux’s yak coat).
The two keep traveling following the map until they reach the X, not realizing they’re being followed by the creepy kid from the morgue and one of the bald guys. They dig numerous holes, and when they’re just about to give up, Dirk gives an impassioned speech and Todd needs to dig one more time, right where he needed to. They find a thing and another map to another thing, eventually they take all these things and build some sort of machine (probably the time travel device). As they’re having their third or fourth heart to heart this episode, the bad guys attack. In a panic, Dirk throws the kitten, which has been ensouled with the hammerhead shark. The kitten shark makes quick work of the bad guys and the boys realize what killed Patrick Spring. In the final heart to heart Todd and Dirk have this episode, Todd reveals that he lied to his parents and sister about having the hallucination disease to get money and not work. Dirk talks some sense into Todd who realizes he is Dirk’s friend and that he’ll have to tell Amanda the truth.
Amanda gets to have fun this episode hanging out with the Rowdy 3 who we learn are all former Blackwing recruits known as Project Incubus. They are psychic energy vampires, who feed off of heavy emotions. Amanda eventually has another episode when they’re beating up a patrol car and the Rowdy 3 feed off of it and tell her she doesn’t need to worry about that anymore. The two army men from Project Blackwing try to apprehend the Rowdy 3 by just talking, but the young idiot makes the situation worse by taking Amanda hostage. Everyone disbands and Amanda runs back to Todd’s apartment where Farrah eventually mets back up with her… who is also freaking out about her day.
The detectives follow up on Gordon Rimmer while being tailed by Farrah. They go to Gordon’s former place of work, no surprise here, a zoo. The building Gordon and crew had been hanging out in is a condemned zoo building he used to operate. They take all of the evidence to their chief and the chief denies them their request to get a warrant to search the abandoned zoo facility. So they decide to check the place out anyways, inside they find a pile of dead bodies in a room. They get outside and are assaulted by the bald head gang while Gordon flees. The older detective takes one of the electric crossbow arrows to the abdomen and is bleeding out as they try to flee. Farrah covers them and kills one of the random bald heads before leaving to go meet up with Amanda while looking for Todd and Dirk.
In the final moments of the episode, we see the new director of Project Blackwing debriefing the young idiot if he could do a better job than his commanding officer. He thinks he can… This isn’t going to go well for Dirk and friends.
If you weren’t moved by Dirk and Todd’s interactions this week, you’re cold hearted. I care about these characters, even the smaller ones that get shot and die. I kind of want to complain about how much of the Todd/Dirk story this week was just interpersonal relationship drama through a lot exposition, but it was good character development and it revealed a lot about Dirk’s powers and why Todd is the way he is. This week, we learned that the hammerhead shark was in the kitten the entire time, the Rowdy 3 were confirmed as Blackwing subjects with their powers revealed, and how horrible a person Todd was.
